The re-release of The Lion King in 3D was a great move by Disney to reintroduce their highest grossing animation movie to new audiences and older fans like me. Yes, I said older. When I first watched The Lion King, I was 13. Now, 17 years later I still find myself being 'emotionally moved' by that pivotal scene somewhere in the middle of the movie. *Sobs* SCARYOUWORTHLESSSONOFABITCH!!

I found myself questioning the climax of the movie though. Go watch it again (or if its your first time, what are you waiting for!?) and tell me if you know what I mean.

Two cars from the 80s that I still wish I owned

Mazda RX-7 FC3S (1986)
Currently available at RM30k-45k

The second generation RX-7 ("FC"), still known as the Savanna RX-7 in Japan, featured a complete restyling reminiscent of the Porsche 944 or Porsche 924. Mazda's stylists, led by Chief Project Engineer Akio Uchiyama, focused on the Porsche 944 for their inspiration in designing the FC because the new car was being styled primarily for the American market, where the majority of first generation RX-7's had been sold. This strategy was chosen after Uchiyama and others on the design team spent time in the United States studying owners of earlier RX-7's and other sports cars popular in the American market. The Porsche 944 was selling particularly well at the time and provided clues as to what sports-car enthusiasts might find compelling in future RX-7 styling and equipment.

DeLorean DMC-12 (1981)
Unavailable in Malaysia

Most commonly known as the DeLorean, it was the only model produced by the company which would go into liquidation as the US car market went through its largest slough since the 1930s. The DMC-12 features gull-wing doors with a fiberglass "underbody", to which non-structural brushed stainless steel panels are affixed. A modified version of the car became iconic for its appearance as a time machine in the Back to the Future film franchise.

THE INSPIRATIONS OF A GARDEN

Step into the Garden of Diwali where the refreshing scent of chrysanthemum, jasmine, lotus and heliconia welcomes you with open arms. Spread across the Water Feature at Sunway Pyramid’s Ground Floor, the Garden of Diwali is not just a picturesque garden to behold but is also rich with symbolisms that honour the sacred celebration of Deepavali (or Diwali). The Garden of Diwali is created in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration at Sunway Pyramid which runs from 14 October until 30 October 2011.

At the centre of the garden, among thousands of flowers, therein lies a beautiful floral kolam or ranggoli made of fresh flowers instead of dyed crushed rice as more commonly seen during this festive season. The captivating sight becomes the highlight of the Garden of Diwali which adds flavour to its beauty.

Read the sign leaning against the kolam and you will learn that the choreography of these flowerbeds are inspired by a Hindu mythology, Goddess Lakshmi who is goddess of wealth and prosperity. She will only visit places that are nicely decorated during Deepavali and thus homes are usually decorated with fresh colorful flowers, the essential ingredient in Deepavali decorations.

Standing on the kolam is a nine foot sculpture, overlooking the magnificent landscape with two other sculptures at the edge of the garden. These three sculptures are guardians of the Garden of Diwali that play a role in both symbolic and aesthetic value of the garden as do other elements.

From the sign located in front of the tallest sculpture, you will learn how the uniqueness of Indian sculptures influenced the design of the three sculptures at the Garden of Diwali. In India, there has always been a close relationship between dance and visual arts. Even when figures stand at ease, they seem to strike a graceful dancer's pose. No other tradition has united the arts of sculpture and dance so joyously and with such confidence as the Indians. As each sculpture communicates ideas, emotions and mood through their movements, the guardians of the Garden of Diwali communicate hope, peace and love.

The number three reflected in the presence of the three guardians at the Garden of Diwali also has a symbolic significance to Hinduism. Known as triah, the number three represents the creation. According to Hinduism, there is a correlation of orderliness and regularity, known as Rtam or the rhythm of the universe, in the creation of all things. The guardians, in this respect, signify the perfect creation and the existence of orderliness and regularity (rtam) in the garden.

Hanging near the pillars that outline the Garden of Diwali are unique Indian lanterns which are replicas of the Green Roof Kandil from Mumbai. The word ‘kandil’ means lantern in Sanskrit which means ‘an open structure of light material set upon a roof, to give light and air to the interior’. It is a lantern with a wooden framework, covered in coloured matte or glossy papers. These lanterns are generally hung in front of homes during Deepavali.

The lanterns directly signify the celebration of the festival of lights. According to a mythological epic, Deepavali was celebrated by Indians all over the world when Lord Rama, a Hindu God, returned after a 14-year exile following his triumph in defeating demon-king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya who lived in the Capital of Rama illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (basic earthen oil) and by bursting firecrackers. Deepavali is therefore a celebration of victory of good over evil, light over darkness and also the celebration of the Inner Light that is beyond our body and mind, just as how we celebrate the birth of our physical being and all these are symbolically reflected in the lanterns at the Garden of Diwali.

“The Deepavali celebration at Sunway Pyramid is yet another take of an artistic plunge by the management of the mall,” said Sunway Pyramid Director of Marketing Phang Sau Lian. “For the whole year, Sunway Pyramid has taken the artistic approach to marry both art and shopping to further embellish the creativity in everything we do. By far, we have incorporated the artistic element in almost all our events, starting from Chinese New Year, the Chinese Opera; Hari Raya, the Wau; and now, for Deepavali, the Garden of Diwali.”

“Since the garden was opened to public on 14 October, the garden has become a centre of attraction to people from all walks of life and all races – the Indians, the Malays, the Chinese and even the expatriates and the tourists who walk around the mall to explore the garden and also to take pictures of the garden,” said Phang.

The garden’s inspiring creativity and beauty are further extended to the ‘Garden of Diwali Gift Redemption’ campaign which runs from 14 October to 30 October 2011. The Three Musketeers (2011)

Im not sure if "The Three Musketeers" is supposed to be a reboot of the 1993 Walt Disney film but there's not much to explore other than better effects and a 21st century retelling of the classic tale. Many over-the-top (OTT) moments are fun yet gives the movie less credibility in terms of relating to classic literature. Impressive music by Paul Haslinger should be noted. Despite being entertaining and hardly boring, the weakest link in the movie is Milla Jovovich's character. No offense to Milla but there should have been lesser emphasis on her character and more on the title fellows. Ray Stevenson steals the show as Porthos. D'Artagnan, Aramis, and Athos are left in the shadows.

The Thing (2011)

"The Thing" is supposed to be a prequel but rips off so much from the original in terms of storyline and scenes it's absurd. Even the title, its supposed to be a prequel but shares the same name as it's sequel? Okay.. CGI gore is not as effective as John Carpenter's 1982 'sequel'. Music is pretty crap too. Dissapointing.

After two great albums, these bunch of marooners have a bunch of memorable tunes and are sure to a good night of music. Better if the stadium was open air, else it would be 'Harder To Breathe'.

Here's a simple analysis and example from Orianthi's 'According To You':

'You' tells her that:
She's stupid, useless, can't do anything right. She's difficult, hard to please, forever changes her mind, a mess in a dress, not punctual even if her house caught on fire. She's boring, moody, can;t take her anyplace. She sucks at telling jokes, she has the worst attention span.

Orianthi should realise that 'Him' was actually 'You' when they first got together oh not so long ago. Sure, guys can say some brash things, but that's reality. On another hand, if she decides to go with 'Him', over time 'Him' will change into 'You' over time. So good luck with that.

Universal Soldier : Regeneration (aka A New Beginning) Review

In the world of entertainment and movies, growing up is the 80s meant one thing. Growing up with action movies. From juggernauts like Stallone and Schwarzenegger, and your temperamental good cops like Willis and Seagal you get all sorts of memorable characters that you have grown to love and grasp it as part of your childhood (yea its usually rated R, but no one gives a sh*t and we turned out fine :)).

Oh hell yea!

The original "Universal Soldier" (UniSol) came out when I was 11 (Hint: Same year as the Barcelona Olympics). I remember watching the tape many times over (no internet back in the day, and my Micro Genius was locked up on weekdays), watching the then 'in his prime' Jean-Claude Van Damme go all out against 'Ivan Drago/He-Man/Punisher' Dolph Lundgren.

"Universal Soldier" was not the greatest of action films, but it did make a stamp in my brain (im sure most Gen X kids agree) and will probably always be there. Heck, two dead Vietnam vets (1 crazed and 1 righteous) get reanimated in the 1990s as supersoldiers? Ingenious!

Fast forward 18 years whilst forgetting the abomination that was "Universal Soldier: The Return" (and the other 2 lesser known TV sequels; the latest film ignores them as well) and you get "Universal Soldier: Regeneration", or A New Beginning as it's known on these shores.

What a crap poster.

Little advertising and marketing led me to only find out about this movie just over a couple of months ago, and when I saw the trailer for the first time, my chronological thoughts are as follows.."Damn this looks cheap as hell...Woah, Van Damme looks old....OMFG Dolph Lundgren is BACK!! And with UFC champ Andrei Arlovski!"

I write this after coming back from the cinema from watching this and I must say that this movie is extremely disappointing and has taken away the dignity of the two main characters from the original movie. I can't believe that Lundgren even actually signed up for this.

They don't look so bad here. Go watch the trailer. Gawd.

The story is crap. The colour scheme in the entire movie is crap. The UniSol's head gear look like used spraypainted webcams. Van Damme can hardly be seen doing any of his trademark moves. All he does is sulk. Lundgren is hardly given anything worthwhile to do. The actors are too damn old (a Rocky Balboa this is not!). I personally feel cheated and robbed of the JCVD/Lundgren rematch of the ages. I won't spoil more. A sequel to UniSol definitely has potential in this day and age, but the treatment for this was really off target. The first five minutes from the original movie is better than 1.5 hours of this crap.

As usual with B-grade flick, the ending suggests a sequel. I say leave JCVD out of it. But then again, who wants to watch a UniSol movie without him.

Rome. A city rich with history, art, and culture. What was once one of the most powerful empires in the world is now a historical landmark. The Colosseum, and museums should be places not to miss... and not to mention, the Vatican City.

One of Asia's top destination spots, Tokyo is a haven for electronics and Japanese culture. Merely 70 years ago, the Zeros were feared but is now the country that manufactures the likes of Toyotas and Hondas. Where be them geishas?

7. Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

My top pick for the continent of South America would be Rio in Brazil due to its urban skyline and its beaches.

Once split into two by a wall, is a major center of culture, politics, media, and science in Europe
Remark: Take my breath awayyy...err, waitaminute.

5. Bangkok (Thailand)

The nearest city from KL on my top 10 cities list is Bangkok, Thailand. Many of my friends have already visited the bustling city and came back with rave reviews and also bagsful of clothes and trinkets.
Remark: One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster, the bars are temples but the pearls ain't free... To tailor make a 'Bangkok Dangerous' suit and pants!

4. London (United Kingdom)

London will be the first city on my list to be crossed out this coming April. Can't wait to explore the many landmarks and football stadiums around the city.
Remarks: Will check on the integrity of London Bridge to see if it's falling down. Perhaps meet a fair lady in the process.

3. Paris (France)

Another city I hope to cross out this year is Paris. Insyaallah..*I mean Godwilling, I would have enough quid to hop on a train and bullit across the channel and grab some strudels and baguettes! A photo with the Tour Eiffel (Eiffel Tower) is a MUST.
Remarks: Either 'one night in Paris' or.. not.

2. New York City (USA)

The top two cities on my list are in the United States of America. New York City is one of the most populated cities in the country. The location for movies like Ghostbusters, King Kong, The Godfather, Highlander, Die Hard With A Vengeance, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men... (and the list never ends). Landmarks like the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, ground zero WTC, and the Rockefeller Center are places just not to be missed. Oh, and Hot Dogs with everything on 'em.

3. Die Hard (1988)

The movie that launched Bruce Willis as a household name is more known for its action sequences and legendary John McClane was set on Christmas eve.

Best bit: McClane walks on glass barefoot while fighting baddies + the end credits

2. Home Alone (1990)

Who can't forget the adorable Macaulay Culkin in this modern Christmas classic. Definitely an unmissable movie on any occasion.

Best bit: Culkin's character tricks the baddies into thinking there's a deal gone bad in the house when he's actually playing an old video of a gangster movie.

1. Gremlins (1984)

'Gremlins' tops my list of all time favourite Christmas movie because it has funny, scary, and romantic elements where it needed it to be, and also because I kept watching it when I was a kid. It has quite a number of memorable scenes and Christmas carols in its throughout the movie which is a plus.

Best bit: Gremlins watching 'Snow White' in the cinema, the showdown with Stripe.. & Phoebe Cates

My favourite Christmas song of all time has gotta be "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!".

The lyrics speak of snow, which is so so cold. Yet the music and tune of the song makes me feel so warm and happy inside. My fav. rendition of the song is from Dean Martin. Stay clear of Gloria Estefan's version. It's yellow snow.

Also helps that the song is on the end credits to both 'Die Hard' and 'Die Hard 2: Die Harder'. :)

13 Dec, San Antonio - Texas - Who?? To those who have not watched the WWE in a while, this past Sunday. newcomer Sheamus 'The Celtic Warrior' defeated John Cena in a Tables match at the TLC PPV and became the new WWE Champion.

I must say, this was the most shocking and interesting title change in recent memory. He debuted on WWE television barely 6 months (in ECW) and is now on top of the mountain that others take years to climb. I personally thought that he would be a passing phase (like Ken Shamrock a decade ago) or at the very least get a legitimate shot at least 3 months away at Wrestlemania XXVI.

All hail Sheamus!

Oh well. I hope he keeps the title at least til Wrestlemania. Constant World title changes are a real pain in the sports entertainment industry.

The truth about the 'Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer' Christmas carol is a sad one. The song was created by Robert L. May in 1939. By now, everyone knows the tune and lyrics to this evergreen classic. I remember singing it back when I was a child, thinking of the magical Rudolph who led Santa and the other reindeers to bring presents to the children one foggy Christmas eve.

The truth was far from what was told in it's lyrics though. Oddly enough, the birth of the song also marked the end of the popular modern Christmas as we know it. Christmas was marketed as a winter holiday of gifts and family reunions. What ever happened to it being Jesus Christ's birthday? That my friends, is another story. Here is what happened one Christmas eve in the early 20th century which Robert L. May wrote about...

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

The continuing verse leads us to believe that Rudolph did indeed take lead and saved Christmas. but truth is after Santa requested of his assistance...

"You want me to guide your sleigh? After all the sh*t you and these g*ddamn idiots put me through these past 12 months?? Coz Dasher is dashing, and Prancer is faster than I am?? Cause Comet is fairer and Cupid is cuter than I am?? Sticks and stones may break my bones, but screw you I'm gonna destroy Christmas!"

Santa looked shocked and apologized on behalf of the other reindeers.

"Hah! Screw you fat ass! I'm gonna stay put eat some north pole grass and sh*t all over your winter wonderland coz that's what you get when you f*ck with me Nick! When tomorrow comes, everyone will remember my name when this holiday arrives! Wahaahahahah!" Rudolph went on and did as he said, and left the North Pole to start up a traffic light business in Canada.

Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history!

Thus ends the modern Hallmark Christmas. No more chimneys for you Santa!~

Today, another professional wrestler passes away before his time. Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Umaga (as he's most well known) has died of a heart attack.

Born in American Samoa, Fatu (ring name 'Umaga'), 36, was member of the famous Anoa'i wrestling family, which includes cousin Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, his two uncles, who wrestled as The Wild Samoans in the 1980s, and brothers, Sam "Tonga Kid" and Solofa Jr. "Rikishi," according to Wrestlers Rescue, a support group for retired professional wrestlers.

The two-time WWE Intercontinental champion, also known as "The Samoan Bulldozer," squared off with the likes of Triple H, The Game and Ric Flair before the WWE terminated in contract in June for having violated the WWE's Wellness Program and refusing to enter rehab, the WWE said on its site.

The sad world of wrestling hits the fan again. I wonder who's next.

Today marks the first day of the 'Send Bry to London in 5 months' campaign.

Time to trim up on expenses (as if I already haven't), stay home more often, and eat less extravagant food. Do share money saving tips with me to aid the campaign.

In approximately 19 weeks from today, I should be fulfilling my dream and experiencing my first (and hope not the be the last..) time being in attendance at a WWE Raw, Smackdown, and ECW TV tapings at the o2 Arena in London, England. These are the ones that are actually shown on TV as televised episodes and not the 'House shows', which are more like practice run visits like the one my bro, his girlfriend (now wife), sis, grandpa, and Nick watched at Putra (pew-tra, as The Rock advertised it) Stadium, Bukit Jalil back in 2002 when The Rock and Y2J Chris Jericho rocked the house.

The thought suddenly occured to me when they visited the UK some weeks ago. And it is sure alot more expensive to buy flight tickets to the United States to watch them perform.

Also, as time passes, more and more classic WWE superstars would fade and it would be a real shame not watching them in their glory right before my very eyes. I would really love to watch my childhood favourite, The Undertaker beat the crap out of someone before he retires. The likes of Degeneration X - Triple H & 'The Heartbreak Kid' Shawn Michaels would be an unmissable spectacle.

Destiny awaits.

Another five months have passed since my last post. Much has changed yet again. Jobs have changed, my ever precious gym membership is suspended, Delilah is gone, and what was supposed to be Liverpool's season has gone down the drain.

The last day of November marks the end of 2009. With 31 days left, have you fulfilled your resolutions?

Even after all this time I'm still soul searching. Never knowing what I really want in life is a major pain in the ass. I doubt I would be able to do much searching as the holiday season approaches. I hope that Christmas this year would be like the ones before.. being with the family, sharing laughs and food... and most of all love.

Tomorrow dawns a new day for The Chronicles of Bry, as I will once again try to get back into posting thoughts and other things right here on this page.

A new mission will begin tomorrow. Stay tuned to find out.

The Ethan Yap Project Does The 3R Circle Back To Nature Relay

7 days. That was the last time I trained. Damn on and off flu kept 'bugging' me the entire week before I succumbed to a medium-to-high fever on Thursday.

The 3R Circle Back To Nature Relay 2008 was upon us. 3.92kms of uphills and downhills. Ian, Ashraf, and I formed "The Ethan Yap Project", a tribute to our migrated comrade in Melbourne, AU. Our captain, Ian Yap budgeted that each of us could complete the course in 20 mins. Oh how wrong he was. We finished the track in about 26-29 mins.

To tell you the truth, after running approximately 2 minute on the uphill start, I began to feel fatigued. I blamed it on me recovering from my illness just 2 days prior but I don't think that was totally the case. My cardio training is only based on flat ground. Well, more like flat treadmill ground. Looks like this is something I should work on. As our captain told me, "Running outside is not the same as running on the treadmill in the gym." Hmm.

Undoubtedly, this run was the smallest one in terms of participation. I think it was because it wasn't a publicly publicized one. About 33 teams of 3 showed up to run the grueling track of Bukit Kiara.

I guess the best part of the run is that we were awarded with medals in the end. =) My first ever medal of any kind!!! It took me 27 years. Better late than never.

I only had just over 2 hours of sleep the night before and that goes to show that if you're mentally prepared, all it takes is to get your two feet moving to finish the course, even at better speeds.

The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions across the globe in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon Of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research.

The event was founded in 1981 by Isadore Sharp, who contacted Terry in-hospital by telegram and expressed his wishes to hold an annual run in Terry's name to raise funds for cancer research. The run itself is informal which means that the distance often varies, usually between 5 and 15 kilometres; participation is considered to be more important than completing the set distance.

Despite having a faulted start and lack of signages that show the 'Advance' and 'Family' courses (where some people took a wrong turn..), the run was a great way to spend a Sunday morning. Waking up at 6 and heading to KL while the Sun rises felt great. I finished the 6.5km course in 43 minutes. Damn. Was targeting 39. Ian beat me to the finish line during the final 1km due to me slowing down and not hitting my NOS on my N95 in time. Sigh. Nvm. Next week its the IOI Community Run, which is 7.5km. My target? 48 mins.

After doing some research on my grandmother(Mom's side)'s Portuguese language, it is interesting to note the following about the Portuguese dialect (Kristang) that is spoken by Malaysians with 'Portuguese' roots.

Our Korean adventure started when we entered a convenience store which was pretty crowded with the congregation of a nearby church. Everyone in the shop (around 20) were speaking in a language that was foreign to me. Korean. Ahh.. The pronunciations, the words... remeniscent from the days where I watched Korean soaps. Here's what we found while browsing for some groceries...

The Scorpion King 2: Rise Of A Warrior (2008) - 2.5 stars

Adding another chapter to "The Mummy" franchise, this prequel to "The Scorpion King" is a rather awkward addition. However, despite it's crumminess, awesomely bad casting (Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's Mathayus played by not-so-buff ex Power Ranger Michael Copon?!) and pathetic acting from almost everybody in it's cast (especially UFC Heavyweight Champ Randy Couture), the movie does it's job by entertaining it's audiences. Recommended to fans of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess" fans. I actually think this would make a pretty cool TV series. :)

Startling satellite pictures taken three days ago show that melting ice has opened up the fabled North-West and North-East Passages - making it possible to sail around the Arctic ice cap.

The opening of the passages has been eagerly awaited by shipping companies which hope they will be able to cut thousands of miles off their routes.

They had the power to educate the younger generation almost two decades ago. They may have only delayed the inevitable.

Doomsday (2008) - 2.75 stars

The trailer gave me the impression that this was a cross between Resident Evil and Escape From New York. Post killer plague semi-futuristic Britain looks grim and dirty. Action sequences are good, quick, and gory. All in all, an entertaining movie.

Men's Health/Shape Magazine Run '08

After some work colleagues decided to drop out of the run (except Samantha), I got Mei Su & Soon Min aka Ethan to take up the empty spots and join the run. It's actually the first 'marathon' I've participated in.

5 kms is the distance in the 'fun run' category (with our runner's number starting with 'F'). Took me about a month plus in the gym training for this and it really paid off. I finished the course just below 30 mins and came in as one of the first twenty. =D

Freebies, 'super yummy' Milo in a truck, finishing the course in due time, and 1901 Hot Dogs as post running food made it a really fun morning.

I wonder when the next marathon thingy will be. :)

With high hopes came dissapointment. Lack of fun and grandness makes this entry only average. Maria Bello did a good job with Rachel Weisz's English accent but doesn't come close to the real character. Even Brendan Fraser seems tiresome.
